  • Do you need a camera or a tank? Something like this http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1287 is better than a cute, but fragile Canon.

  • Please enlighten me with some of your pictures taken by your "TANK OLYMPUS" :)
You can also see some pictures on my web site taken by my fragile Canon(s) (including my 3 year old SD700 that been to 3 countries with me, dropped several times, used over 10000 shots, my 1D MKII has over 120000 shots count and my 1D MKII N which has been dropped from shoulder high 3 times with 70-200mm f2.8L on it and has over 1/4 million shots count)
Talking about cute but fragile ^_^

  • Gino, relax...and enjoy the humor. The reality is that all the major makes (Canon, Nikon, Minolta/KM/Sony, Pentax, Olympus) make, and have made, excellent SLR/D-SLR's for forty years or so.

My family has a AL-1 that's over 25 years old and still working (I used in a lot back in the mid 80's). We have an Eos Ix that is over 10 years old, has a few problems, but is still working pretty well. OTOH, we had another Canon FD series SLR that got dropped on soft ground, and never worked well after.

The reality is that the camera is just a tool, and the photographer is much more important than the make or model of camera. And, yes, I've seen excellent pictures taken with Olympus digicams - again, it's the photographer, not the camera.

  • I am very relax, Mr. Anonymous =). I just do not agree with your "cute, but fragile Canon." statement =P
I agree and disagree what you said. IMHO, a photo shows 3 things of the photographer:
    1) The knowledge of the equipment. Correct exposure requires lots of knowledge of metering, lighting and be able to execute these through the equipment.
    2) Compose the frame. This is after all what the photographer want to say in the picture.
    3) Editing the photo after it was taken. This is what to make a good picture great. My hat off to Photoshop ^_^
All the above will become the "Style" of the photographer. But one photographer can not achieve the best "style" without the right tools just like a mechanic can not remove a rust bolt with a cheap wrench as the bolt will end up being stripped. Tool is not the "only thing" to create a good photo but does play a important role. Remember the good ole days that people were counting the white lenses during the Olympic broadcast? Have you seen a photographer in the winter Olympic game using Olympus gears? I can not take a shot of a skater in the air while doing the triple axle, facing me in the low light condition without a Canon 1D and a fast lens before 2004 for its ability to take usable files at ISO 1600, 9 frames per second. Things changed a lot these years due to the technology. I was shocked to see how clean the files are taken at ISO 12800 with the latest DSLRs.
I am glad to see you enjoy photography as much as I do and respect your knowledge of the equipments. Cheers and happy photographing!!
